Product Applications
Most US High Tension Cable Barrier (HTCB) installations are in interstate medians. However, other applications have been widely adopted in other countries and some US states.
Achieving the goals of the Towards Zero Deaths (TZD) approach, designers should consider using HTCB as roadside guardrail and as positive protection in narrow medians.
Median Barrier
The most common application so far in the US, Brifen USA median installations have been helping save lives and reduce serious injuries in crashes on high speed, limited access facilities since 2000!
Roadside Barrier
Many states are starting to use high tension cable barriers (HTCB) in place of guardrail for shielding roadside hazards. Considering the softer impact, reduced installation cost and ease of maintenance, it's a safety device all designers should consider.
Narrow Median Barrier
Used for preventing opposite direction and side-swipe crashes on undivided or narrow median 2, 3 and 4 lane roads, high tension cable barriers can keep vehicles in their lanes and greatly reduce the risk of these infrequent, but extremely violent collisions.
2+1 Roadway
Originating in Sweden, the 2+1 Roadway is a 3 lane roadway with a central overtaking/passing lane changing permitted direction every 1.25 km with a separating cable barrier. In the US, several agencies have installed median cable on 4 lane undivided roads with previous histories of opposite direction head-on crashes, showing positive reductions in A+K crashes.
