Z-Post 4 Rope System & MGT

Depending on project requirements the NCHRP 350 TL-4 Z-Post length of need (LON) barrier can be terminated using the Brifen MASH Gating Terminal (MGT). With the MASH test rating and simplified, in-line design the MGT has a no-release cable feature and fewer parts. Consider using the MGT as a terminal upgrade when removing/resetting anchors on existing Brifen Z-Post installations or in new Z-Post installations to anticipate barrier section (LON) upgrades to MASH in the future.

Why Brifen systems?

  • Patented interwoven cables

    • Creates high rope/post friction and causes each post to act as a “mini-anchor”

    • Better performance on curves

    • Eliminates need for intermediate anchors

    • Deflections are more predictable

    • Limits extent of damage

  • Does not impede drainage and reduces wind row from snow or sand

  • Cost-effective compared to other longitudinal barriers

  • Rarely results in serious injury to vehicle occupants

  • No metal attachments that may create hazardous debris upon impact

  • No field swaging or hardware assembly required to connect ropes

  • Non-releasing terminal connection reduces likelihood of losing system tension

Z-Post Wire Rope Safety Fence (WRSF)

NCHRP 350 TL-4

The Z-Post system is a high-tension median or roadside cable barrier system successfully tested to TL-4 and TL-3 on flat grade and to TL-3 on a 4:1 slope per FHWA Eligibility Letters HSA-10/B-82B, B82-B1 and B-82D. The Length of Need (LON) consists of Galvanized Steel Z-Posts, also called Line Posts, which are placed in socketed concrete foundations or driven steel sockets.

The top rope rests in a slot in the top of the post and the three bottom ropes alternate post sides, while resting on plastic pegs. Line posts also have a plastic excluder and post cap with a reflector attached at required intervals per agency requirements. The woven rope design improves system performance and ease of maintenance while providing predictable deflections regardless of length between terminals.

MASH Gating Terminal (MGT)

MASH TL-3

Brifen’s MASH Gating Terminal (MGT) has been successfully tested to MASH 2016 with FHWA Eligibility Letter HSST1/CC137. It can be located anywhere within the clear zone and has all ropes anchored into one foundation. The inline level design is 37LF and includes three terminal posts.

Site specific soil analysis by a Professional Engineer is imperative for proper foundation sizing to prevent anchor movement and provide adequate factor of safety when rope tension increases at lower temperatures.
